Yes for GPS position, coordinates, the compass, route recording, Backtrack, saved places and the field and aviation tools. Map backgrounds and worldwide place search use Apple Maps and need a connection; without one, the map may be blank but your position, tracks and tools still work.
To show your coordinates, record routes and guide you. "While Using" is enough for recording, including with the screen locked. "Always" is only needed if you turn on arrival alerts, which notify you when the app is closed.
No. The app saves an in-progress recording regularly. After a crash or restart, it offers to resume the recording or save it as a track.
No. It flashes the screen and torch and plays a sound so people nearby can find you, and it can prepare a text message with your position for your emergency contacts. It does not contact emergency services. Call your local emergency number (112 / 911) or use your phone's Emergency SOS via satellite.
They are planning aids, not certified equipment. Always verify against your aircraft's POH, official charts and publications, current weather and ATC. The built-in airport list is a small sample set.
